Both the FTS Programme and our Scholars have had a busy year – and we’d like to share a few of our 2024 highlights.
FTS Scholars more likely to remain in teaching than other teachers
In the 2023-24 academic year, 90.5% of Scholars on the FTS Programme who began initial teacher training remained in teaching after three years. This is in comparison to the current national average of 74.1% for the 2023 reporting year, as reported by the Department for Education.
FTS Programme Director, Nina Dhillon, commented:
“For our Scholars to maintain a retention rate well above the national average is an absolute testament to their talent, fortitude, and dedication to their subject specialism. Congratulations to our brilliant Scholars!”
Scholar achievements and greatest successes
Throughout the year, we’ve been delighted to hear so many Scholar success stories, and have been sharing these achievements with their peers.
It’s not often that we have time to reflect on just how much impact we have as educators in the classroom. Here’s a reminder of just some of the successes our Scholars have had this year that we’ve managed to capture.

New research: Predicting later classroom practice
The use of assessment centres as part of a teacher selection approach has been widely discussed. Using data from the FTS programme, Education Development Trust (the delivery centre of FTS) wished to determine the effectiveness of this approach as a predictor of future teaching performance.
We conclude that some assessment centre activities can indeed be used to predict later classroom effectiveness, and therefore support teacher recruitment.

National Conference 2024 is “best one yet”
In May, the FTS team welcomed Scholars to the 2024 National Conference in Birmingham. This year’s conference featured FTS’ largest line-up of speakers yet, whose session topics were largely guided by what Scholars wanted to develop further.
We were incredibly proud that alumni from the FTS programme were included in this speaker line-up. Each speaker session received a rating of at least 4 out of 5 from our Scholars, with one noting that the 2024 National Conference was the “best one yet”.
You can watch highlights of the 2024 National Conference here.
Next year’s National Conference preparation is well underway – and we’ll start revealing our speaker line-up in the new year, so watch this space!
